Hi there, came across your transmission-daemon setup guide for Ubuntu and want to thank you for a great little tutorial BUT do want to point on some things. I would have commented on that blog post BUT I couldn't find leave a comment, it's possible it's because it's an older post that it auto disabled comments? I wanted to give feedback as I think it's invaluable to others. So I had setup my transmission long ago, well recently for some reason I was getting Error: Permission Denied when I tried to add a torrent thru the web gui. I am still on 10.04 Ubuntu but it may be the same for newer versions of Ubuntu, according to my check I am running Transmission version 1.93-0ubuntu0.10.04.1. To get it working again I basically did the following

1. Before changing anything in the settings.json file, it's paramount to stop the transmission-daemon. This will allow edits to the settings and when you start up the service it doesn't overwrite your changes.

2. Ensure that the various locations of settings.json are all the exact same, I am not which one is being parsed (and don't care to spend time to figure it out). I found 1 in ~/.config/transmission-daemon/ as well is /etc/transmission-daemon

3. Obviously the permissions was my problem (weird cause it worked then 1 day it stopped working) so ensure that you chown the group with the -R (which recursively changes all sub folders and files) all folders related to transmission to debian-transmission

That's it, now I can upload torrent links within the Web Gui Interface to transmission again with getting the error permission denied.

PS after doing all this I did go back and double check my rpc-password line within all the settings.json and only 1 was auto updated where it changed the clear text password to a hashed 1 so maybe all those other locations of settings.json I found are not used at all? Like I said, I don't want to spend the time to figure out if they needed as it doesn't bother me and I don't have time to investigate.

Keith,

The feed on the homescreen of the Boxee Box is not configurable in any way. I'm not sure how the content gets loaded, but I have noticed that paid content has found its way in there a lot more frequently since Vudu (and now Netflix) support was added. I think, and this is pure speculation, that content providers pay Boxee for the ad space.

Hi Mike,

Just curious, when you start up the boxee and you get that default slideshow of shows across the bottom ....is that editable?

Loved your review on Amazon. Linked you off my blog.

Thanks for the post! I've tried out Subsonic (both the Linux and OS X servers, as well as the Android app), and think the quality of the programming for it is really impressive. The apps having trial periods and such was a surprise, though I know if I wanted to put in the effort I could create another app using the API. But the work put into Subsonic is so good, I'm happy to support it and try to keep it going. Much better than the DAAP approaches I tried (and gave up on).

Thank you for this post. I had been using Torrentflux, and was looking for a lighter alternative. Your post guided me right through.

Hey, I keep getting a 403:Forbidden error saying that my IP address is unauthorized. I even tried disabling whitelist and it still gives me the error. Any ideas?

I surrounded the config file code in pre tags, so the smart quote issue should be fixed now. Sorry about that.
