Mike Descy is a an information systems auditor and software developer, currently consulting within the regulatory insurance consulting practice at RSM McGladrey. He enjoys cooking, eating (what he’s allowed to nowadays), puttering around on the computer, reading classic literature, and writing in his journal. He currently resides in New Jersey with his lovely wife Allyson, who doesn’t understand yet just how much he loves the New England Patriots.

Grade School

Mike attended elementary school in Enfield, CT, from first grade to the mid-point of fourth grade. He walked to school every day with best friends Brian and Sean, and found his neighborhood full of danger, mystery, and secret passageways (some cruelly kept secret even from him). When he was in fourth grade, his family moved across the river to Suffield, CT, where Mike finished out fourth grade. The move was socially traumatic but eased a bit by all the friendly nerds he knew from a Logo programming course he took at Asnuntuck Community College in the third grade.

Middle School

Mike spent the next four years trapped at the middle school in Suffield. At the time it was a moldy, drafty, dilapidated, undersized prison of a place. Here, Mike got picked up quite a bit for a few years, until he learned to hone his wit to a sharp barb. He hated middle school, for the most part, but due to his hopeless crushes and crushing hopelessness developed a crucial trait: character.

High School

Mike went to high school in Suffield and generally had a great time there. He fronted a rock band, Moondog, with his friends Nate and Sean (nicknamed Cliff). Mike served on class counsel and the student counsel, wrote for the literary magazine, was a revolutionary member of the National Honors Society, and graduated salutatorian of his class.

College

Mike attended Brandeis University in the late 1990′s. While the smart money was on starting a web-based business in your dorm room, Mike was ditching pre-med and studying English and America Literature and pursuing creative writing. While there, Mike wrote, directed, and produced a play, “Rosenthal and Gerstenzang are Dead!”, which parodied his freshman year experience.

Early Career

Mike’s first real job was at Travelers Insurance in Hartford, where he worked as a software developer in the Financial and Corporate Systems department. Mike fell into the lead web developer role, back when that meant the thankless task of updating web sites from around the company. Eventually, Mike because a web technology visionary and evangelist within the group.

Graduate School

After a year working as a programmer, Mike was bored and underpaid and decided to go to business school (which was mostly paid by his employer’s then-generous education reimbursement policy). He selected UConn School of Business, due primarily to proximity, but also to its growing reputation. Mike completed his MBA on a part-time basis, while working his full-time job. The schedule was demanding but very rewarding.

Post-Grad

After graduating business school, Mike got a new job at RSM McGladrey in the CFO Advisory Services practices. Mike also started a networking series in Hartford, which the Business School Alumni and Friends group expanded to Stamford and beyond. Mike moved to Boston for two years, to reconnect with college friends and have fun enjoying city life.

Marriage and Present

Mike met Allyson back in 2005 at the Brandeis Class of 2000 5-Year Reunion and fell in love. It took a while for the two of them to get it together, but in 2008 they started dating for real, and on Valentine’s Day, Mike proposed at Brandeis, where they met. The two were married in May at the Pleasantdale Chateau in West Orange, New Jersey. One month prior, Mike moved to New Jersey, where he and Allyson live to this day.
